This comes off grafted vines in the McLaren Vale Estate vineyard (there’s an Adelaide Hills version, too), with free-run juice fermented cool, then lees stirred to build texture. Maritime of feel, with briny, ozone scents, lemon pith, green apple, Cripps Pink apple skin, some breezy spring florals and a wet concrete mineral note. It has a feathery grip and trademark ‘lip stinging’ acidity, completely in balance, though, lining it up for duty with oysters, grilled garfish and lemon, whiting in lacy tempura batter and the like.

They’re throwing a bit behind this grape variety at Lloyd Brothers, and I’m tasting this Hills example alongside a (I think new) one from McLaren Vale. The Hills has the aromatics, the McLaren Vale a bit more substance and palate weight. I think they are both made the same way, just from different places. Interesting. Good aromatics here, a little blossom and lemongrass, lime leaf, lemon barley and green apple. It’s bright and fresh, quite saline too, with plenty of crunch and energy, a light chalky feel to texture, with a lively finish of good length, with perhaps a dusting of white pepper. Nice wine. Frisky and thirst slaking.

Grafted on to 20 year old rootstock. McLaren Vale is a good place for this grape variety. Lemon, green pear, aniseed. It’s a little bit fleshy, green pear and mint with something of a tonic water bite, some grip and chalkiness to texture, slightly sandy even, with lemon zest and a tangy bite to a finish of good length.
