Ken Gargett - Winepilot

The fruit here is sourced from the Trial Hill Vineyard near Pewsey Vale in the Eden Valley, at the relatively high altitude of around 460 metres. The site, 1.8 hectares, is terraced and contoured, and the vines are around 80 years of age. Fermentation was in stainless steel, after which the wine spent three months on lees. Just 300 dozen made. 2024 is a cracking vintage for the region and this is ridiculously good value. The colour is the very palest lemon hue one could imagine. Opening notes reveal the chalk and minerality supporting the wine, with the limes and sea spray notes overlaid. This is delicate and fragrant, focused and offering good underlying intensity. There is juicy acidity and we see the emergence of hints of mango and grapefruit on the palate. There is unwavering balance and excellent length. A classic and classically beautiful Riesling with fifteen to eighteen years of pleasure ahead. If Alex Head is regularly making Riesling of this sublime quality, it won’t be long before he is mentioned in the same dispatches as some very highly regarded producers.

Gary Walsh - The Wine Front

From Trial Hill, Pewsey Vale. 80 year old vines says the tasting note on the website, and 60s plantings says the label on the bottle. Either way, quite old enough! Stainless steel and aged on lees for three months. Lime and lime rind, grapefruit, a spice and lemongrass character, some lavender perfume. It’s a bright and tangy wine, quite some pulpy grapefruit flavours, some citrus peel bitterness, a firm chalkiness to texture, with a gently savoury finish of excellent length. This feels maybe a more traditional style than is usual for Head, and I reckon better for it as the fruit pops and there’s quite some energy here, albeit with a fair amount of textural complexity rolled in. Nice.

Dave Brookes - Halliday Wine Companion

Pale straw in the glass with aromas of freshly squeezed lime, green apple and grapefruit with hints of citrus blossom, crushed stone, lemongrass, Christmas lily, makrut lime and lemon zest. Quite concentrated and expressive limey fruit on the palate, tautly stretched on a frame of minerals. Plenty of vivid drive and dry, lip-smacking drinkability.

Aromas of lemon peel, apple blossoms, white flowers and slate. The palate is tightly wound, with racy acidity. Very pure and refined.
