The 2023 Pommard Rugiens from Benjamin Leroux is a powerful, sinuous wine with a compact aroma of dark plum and blackberry fruit with earth and mineral notes. My initial impression was 'dark fruit and blood,' because of the iron in the soil. The structure is tannic and powerful. The grapes are from a 0.60ha parcel with a mix of old vines (which Leroux partially destems) and young vines (entirely destemmed before fermentation), aged in cask (20% new). This wine will need five to seven years to reveal its charms and then drink well for 20 years.
