There is an elegant restraint to Benjamin Leroux's 2023 Corton Charlemagne, with aromas of ripe apple and quince, coloured with hints of acacia flower and spice. The texture is rich, but not overly so; there is surprising elegance and finesse. The grapes are from his supplier, whose southeast-facing parcel in Languettes is near the top of the slope; they are pressed gently without crushing, lightly settled, and fermented without sulphur in a mix of small and large casks.

The 2023 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from the lieu-dit of Les Longuettes. Struck flint and glimpses of yellow fruit open on the nose as this fleshes out nicely with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, quite poised with hints of Clementine and quince toward the light spiced finish. This will give 15 to 20 years of drinking pleasure.
