In all its brisk, racy, linear glory, this simply screams Radda – and more specifically, it screams Vigna Istine, which looks northwest up to a soaring 550m. And it does so in the most euphonious tones of redcurrant, rose and juniper. Taut and vibrating, the midweight palate features effortlessly concentrated and precisely etched flavours of raspberry seeds, sumac and cranberry. Crisp tannins are fine-boned yet assertive, and the acidity is pleasantly puckering. Zesty pink grapefruit draws out the finish. Now with five Gran Selezione, owner and winemaker Angela Fronti is a reference for site-specific Chianti Classico.

Always a blend of estate vineyards in Radda and Gaiole, the 2022 incorporates Sangiovese from new acquisitions in Vagliagli and Lamole. It also sees the addition of 1% Malvasia Nera – Angela Fronti says she wanted to preserve the tradition of including a dash of other local varieties. Already quite forward in aromas, the just-bottled annata conveys dark red cherry infused with liquorice and grilled chestnut. Well defined and energetic, the palate progresses to ripe yet fresh raspberry with a crunchy bite, buoyed by abundant bright acidity and pervading fennel notes. Light, granular tannins just need a few more months to integrate.

The 2022 Chianti Classico is juicy, forward and delightful. A burst of sweet red cherry fruit, rose petal, spice and orange peel gives the 2022 tons of immediacy. The 2022 looks to be an early-drinking wine.
