A superb vintage in the Coonawarra region, this is a wine for the long haul. If one may look at the bottom line first, it is a wine which will continue to improve and if you can squirrel it away in the cellar for five or six years before opening one, so much the better. The colour is a dark magenta, while the nose exhibits notes of chocolate, blackberries, spices, dried herbs, licorice, tobacco leaves, cold tea and hints of woodsmoke. Considerable grip is evident, as well as some ever-so-slightly mouthpuckering acidity, there are fine tannins and a balanced, lengthy finish which maintains the intensity for the full journey. Ten years plus, after an initial five years in the cellar, of course.

Smell this wine and know that you’re in for a treat. Pure blackcurrant, mint top notes, undercurrents of black olives and licorice, and a gentle spray of dried tobacco. It’s exactly what you hope to see in a Coonawarra cabernet, and the palate then follows suit: svelte, cloaked gently in cedarwood oak, and harmonious from start to finish.

Familiar, like a person with a face that often gets recognised but cannot be placed. Here you'll discover those first summer cherries, cassis liqueur and Ribena notes. It's followed by star anise, black peppercorns and nigella seed. It's shaped with upright, grainy tannins and acidity that hums along in a repetitive beat. This is a wine that is nipped and tucked nicely with good dark chocolate creaminess. Drinking well now and will certainly have another 8 years or so in the cellar.
