Sam Kim - Wine Orbit
Superbly fruited and enticing, the wine shows black/blueberry, rich floral, game, Asian spice and toasty oak characters on the nose. The palate displays impressive concentration and richness, wonderfully complemented by fleshy texture and beautifully melded tannins. Opulent and structured at once, with a sustained velvety finish.

It’s hard to beat Barossa Shiraz in a good year. This displays all that was good, no, very good, in the ’21 Barossa vintage. Apparently, Le Verrier is the ring of Neptune, and apparently mathematician, one John Couch Adams, along with a few other numbers types got his slide rule and log tables out and proved the existence of Neptune. Back to the wine. Presents with elegance and smooth refinement with plenty of dark berry fruits, coffee and mocha characters and ample supporting integrated oak. It’s rich and dark with great concentration that saunters effortlessly to a long finish.

The wine is named in honour of Simon Adams’ ancestor, John Couch Adams, who was one of the mathematicians who proved the existence of Neptune. Le Verrier is, apparently, one of the five Rings of Neptune. The wine spent two years maturing in French oak hogsheads, 30% new. It is sealed with QORK. An opaque maroon hue, this is a big, bold, full-flavoured, full throttle Barossa Shiraz, from a superb vintage. Notes of black fruits, licorice, coffee beans, dark chocolate and plums abound. Seamless in structure with bright acidity and sleek tannins, this is very long, with good concentration throughout. Big and powerful, expect this to provide pleasure for at least the next twelve to fifteen years.

Deep crimson with aromas of plum compote, blackberry and boysenberry fruits underscored by hints of baking spices, sage, dark chocolate, licorice, violets, tobacco and oak-derived wood spice. Full bodied with compact tight tannins, fine, lacy acidity, pure cassis fruit and a nice long draw on the finish.

It’s sealed with a DIAM 5, which is an interesting choice.
This wine has a good bit of throttle but it’s well controlled through the finish. Blackberry, port wine jelly, red licorice, tobacco and toast characters come laced with peppercorn and malt. A ripple of rust tank in adds a sense of control to what is a pretty hearty wine.
