Jim Budd - Decanter
Vanilla and buttery notes complement ripe stone fruits on the nose, leading to a full-bodied palate that’s balanced by the zinging acidity of 2021. It is still young and ideally needs more time in bottle, or should be decanted before serving. This fine wine has a big potential to age. The Bonnes Blanches parcel is on the south side of the Layon Valley. The vines are planted on schist with the grapes harvested by hand selectively and fermented in a mix of wooden 2000-litre vats and 400-litre barriques before bottling in October 2022.

This is Emmanuel Ogereau’s certified organic Chenin with prospects to get biodynamic farming in full swing soon, I suppose. From the vineyard of Bonnes Blanches in the village of Saint Lambert Du Lattay in Anjou. The fermentation and ageing was done on lees in wooden casks of 20hl and barrels of 400l. Sumthin’ sumthin’ for Burgundy and Jura drinkers, me thinks. There’s a bit of woody spice here, rum raisin start, it feels rich and nutty. Baked apples and truffles. Stonefruit and limey acidity lingering in the back. It’s rich but it serves a load of refreshing and cleansing acidity. There’s more of the mushroom-umami note, marzipan, sea salt and preserved lemons to close on a high note. Something quietly speaks of Jura here and I don’t mind it. It could also be a worthy substitute for your overpriced Bourgogne Blanc. Maybe even 1er cru. Just sayin’.
