Chester Osborn adopts a largely traditional approach here with basket pressing, time on lees, no racking, and no fining or filtration at bottling. You are getting a pretty clear window into the region and the variety. Dark fruits with a red fruit lift merged with dark chocolate, sage bush and lightly savoury notes. The palate is seamlessly structured but with depth and intensity delivered with effortless ease to a long finish.

This a powerful expression from a dry and warm year, but it’s leavened with some suppleness of texture and an energy of delivery – when given air. It has a hard-won quality, with craggy, rocky mineral notes and scrubby dried herbs, fruit notes both red and black – savoury but not desiccated – cured meats, licorice and tar. The tannins have the commanding house signature, but there is a certain refinement here, a succulence not always on show.

Ken Gargett - Winepilot

The famous Rhône blend done McLaren Vale style. Deep magenta in colour, there is a dusty earth note immediately apparent, but which opens up even more if one gives the wine time in the glass. There are also aromas of aniseed, cloves, chocolate, black olives and leather. Brick dust tannins and decent length here, though a touch more intensity – and perhaps that will come with time – would be to the wine’s advantage. The oak seems minimal, suggesting it has been handled in the most deft manner. The palate sees more and more chocolatey notes. The wine has good length and is a ten-year proposition.

Some bottle age has delivered a compact, poised and delicious rendition of the Mediterranean triumvirate, grenache shiraz and mourvèdre. Notes of terra cotta, mocha, oak, mulled Damson plums and five-spice powder. The tannins are well shaped and promote decent length. A little rustic, but not unattractively so.

The 2019 The Ironstone Pressings Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre leads with blood, meat and game, raspberry, goji berry, potpourri and berry compote. In the mouth, the wine is full of dark fruit and exotic spice and feels as if it will age very well. It has a breathy finish and is a touch drying at this point as well. 15% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
