Dark ruby red with brightening rim. On the nose there are notes of candied citrus zest, some raspberry, plus fine mint in the aftertaste, holds back a bit overall. On the palate it shows with mouth-filling notion, spreads like a velvety cloth over the tongue, in addition there is tightly woven tannin, nuances of liquorice on the finish, juicy and exciting, a long, salty finish.

Woodland berry, blue flower and wild mint aromas fill the glass on this fragrant red along with whiffs of dark spice. Focused and linear, the vibrant palate delivers juicy pomegranate, spiced cranberry, star anise and menthol alongside tightly wound, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity keeps it balanced. Drink 2026–2038.

Moving over to Novello, the Paolo Scavino 2018 Barolo Ravera is slightly more simplistic in this vintage with a tart cherry element that opens loud over the bouquet. You might also notice crushed white pepper, salty limestone and crushed earth. The wine remains subtle in texture with silky tannins and medium weight. Some 6,500 bottles were made.
Compact and really focused, with red berries, dried porcini and brighter floral notes. Medium-bodied with a relatively light but firm tannin framework. The flavors remain enticing and fresh. The lighter overall structure reflects the vintage, but there’s room for expansion here, given time. Try from 2024.

The 2018 Barolo Ravera is a relatively soft wine for this site. It offers fine aromatic complexity, but not quite the depth or persistence of the very best years. As such, it will drink well with minimal cellaring. Touches of cedar, dried cherry, pipe tobacco and mint linger.
