The palate turns sweeter and juicier with dried fruit, but the tomatoes and herbs linger through a sophisticated, bitter finish.

Crushed stones and violet pastille blow off to reveal vividly ripe strawberry and blueberry fruit as the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino La Pieve smolders up from the glass. This is silky-smooth and suave, with depths of ripe red and black berries carried across a core of brisk acidity. There is ample depth and length to the finale, along with classic tannins, leaving lavender-tinged plum and hints of cocoa to slowly fade. The 2018 La Pieve is a real charmer.

The La Gerla 2018 Brunello di Montalcino La Pieve also reveals a thicker and more concentrated side similar to the Brunello annata. I would venture that that thickness is even taken a step further with more texture and heaviness that you notice on the palate. That powerful, full-bodied approach is accompanied by ripe cherry, blackberry, cured spice and leather. There is a point of sour fruit on the close. This is a limited production of 6,137 bottles and 150 magnums.
