A pure red-orange rim in the glass. The nose is immediately savoury and complex, led by coffee, dark chocolate, bitter orange zest and warm Christmas spice - clove and cinnamon in particular. It smells excellent, with the savoury spice doing most of the talking. The palate shows real tension and precision. This is a serious, tightly wound style, with everything neatly packaged for now and not giving too much away. There is lovely sweetness on entry, before the wine closes in and becomes firm, taut and composed. The tannins are well integrated, and there is a clear edge of quality here - sculpted, cool, fresh and deep.

Pure red/orange rim. Smells quite savoury with coffee, dark chocolate, bitter orange zest, and some Christmas spices, cloves and cinnamon - it smells excellent with the savoury spice doing most of the talking on the nose. Tension and precision on the palate, this is quite a serious style, still quite tight, all the elements are neatly packaged right now - not giving too much away. Such lovely sweetness to start though just before it closes down and becomes firm and taught. Tannins are well integrated and this has a real edge of quality, feels very sculpted and is still in that neat box not yet quite ready to open and expand. Excellent frame and good potential. Cool and fresh with depth.

Earth and fruit play off of each other on the nose, where first soil and herbs are more present, then cherries and strawberries, finally meeting somewhere in between with dark chocolate and coffee aromas that follow onto the palate. The wine is clearly defined by robust tannins.

A thoroughly drinkable and refined 2017 Brunello with pure cherry, berry and floral character with hints of cedar. It’s full-bodied yet has good tension and focus with a long and beautiful finish.

Poggio Antico is another one of those Montalcino estates that you will forever remember if you've been lucky enough to visit. The vineyards enjoy unobstructed views all the way to the Tyrrhenian Sea (I think this is the only place in the appellation where you can see the water on a clear day). Fruit for the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is sourced from the I Poggi parcel with thin galestro and alberese soils. There is a lot of fresh fruit here, and the tannins are quite soft and supple. Production is 38,000 bottles.
Winemakers Notes
Grown on medium-deep, low-fertility soils with 20–30% gravel and rock content at 480–570m altitude, trained on spurred cordon and guyot. The 2017 harvest, from September 7–15, faced extreme drought during one of the hottest summers in recent decades, though ample winter water reserves and high vineyard altitude helped achieve balanced ripeness. Fermentation runs for 7 days in stainless steel at a maximum of 25°C, followed by 12 days of maceration, then ageing for 30 months in 40-hl traditional Slavonian oak barrels plus 18 months of bottle refinement.
