There’s running debate on a thread on WineFront about people’s top 10 Australian wineries, so it got me thinking similarly about New Zealand. I’d have Fromm in my top five, let alone ten, I reckon. This is a class producer, farming dry and organically, making wines increasingly with zero additions, including this wine, that humbly sees no additions aside a touch of sulphur at bottling, without fanfare or fancy haircuts. Pure as can be expression of place. And outstanding. What a wine. This puts any malbec on earth on notice. It’s so lithe and fresh, impressively concentrated but without weight, rides on a sleigh of the finest, gently-firm tannins and pulls up long with a quietly building cinched-lace pucker. Scents and flavours seems more like fine tea, bergamot soaked berries with a lick of wild mint and fennel, a touch of clove, a chance of plumminess, but whipped away on a savoury glide. It’s a wine for savouring, lip-smacking gently, a nod and a pause. This is fantastic. Now to find some. 96.5

This has very fresh and fragrant aromas of black cherries, brambleberries and white pepper, leading to a palate that has a very polished, pepper-dusted black-fruit core and long, black-fruit flavor to close. Drink or hold.
