Winemakers Notes
Pontet Canet, a distinctive expression of purity
The rich history of Pontet Canet dates back to the early 18th century, a legacy carefully nurtured by only three families over a span of more than 300 years. Since 1975, the Tesseron family has steered this Grand Cru classé in 1855. Alfred, representing the second generation, assumed the reins in 1994. Unyielding in his commitment to quality and a vocal critic of conventional wisdom, he sought innovative farming practices that respected the vine's sensitivities while adapting vinification methods to capture the unique terroir of the estate's diverse plots. Proudly upholding this tradition, his daughter Justine took over in 2015, continuing the estate's evolution with the same ardor as her forebears, breathing fresh life into it.
The Tesseron family has introduced a model of viticulture at Pontet Canet that harmonizes with nature, inspiring many. Notably, Pontet Canet was among the pioneering Bordeaux estates to embrace organic and biodynamic farming practices, and it achieved the distinction of being the first among the Classified Growths to gain double certification for the entire vineyard. Situated in close proximity to Lafite and Mouton Rothschild, Pontet Canet is blessed with an exceptional terroir. Since the 2012 vintage, approximately one-third of its production has been aged in concrete amphorae, preserving the wine's pristine aromatic character.
