Tasting Notes

Hand-picked from the top section of the 1891 Ancestor Vine block, the fruit was fermented in a two-tonne open fermenter and the skins were hand plunged three times a day. At sugar dryness the wine was drained off and the skins pressed. The resultant wine was transferred straight to barrel and matured for nearly two years in one new and two older French oak barriques. Elegant, restrained and poised. A wine of integrity and finesse. Red fruits following on the palate, fine French oak char and fine grain tannins.

Product Highlights

This is Australian Shiraz with serious history behind it. The fruit comes from Ancestor vines planted in 1891 in Blewitt Springs, one of McLaren Vale’s most prized subregions. These are old, low-yielding vines that produce tiny amounts of fruit with real concentration, perfume and structure.

Only 712 bottles were made from this release, sourced from just two rows of vines. The fruit was hand-picked, hand-plunged three times a day, then matured for almost two years in French oak before being given further time in bottle.

That extra patience matters. With a decade of age already behind it, this is Shiraz that has moved beyond raw power into something more layered, settled and cellar-worthy.

The pedigree is hard to ignore too. It comes from a fifth-generation winemaker whose family has played a major role in Australian wine history. The first vintage of this wine made a huge impression, earning 99 points and drawing comparisons to the arrival of some of Australia’s most famous Shiraz releases.

This museum release has also earned serious critical praise, with five reviews of 95 points or higher, including 97 points from Steve Leszczynski, 96 points from Wine Advocate, 96 points from Halliday Wine Companion, 96 points from The Real Review and 95 points from Andrew Caillard MW.

If you love great Australian Shiraz, this sits firmly in collector territory. Ancient vines, tiny production, serious reviews and a decade of bottle age already done for you.

It’s a wine for the cellar, the decanter, and the kind of dinner where you want the bottle to do a bit of talking.
