Tasting Notes

In the glass, the colour is almost black, so dense it appears atramentous. The nose is immediately striking, with layers of smoke, Havana leaf and roasted coffee beans, lifted by bright notes of currant and cherry. The palate is powerful yet composed – broad, creamy and fresh, with remarkable density. Every sip reveals both elegance and intensity, hallmarks of Haut-Brion’s terroir. The finish is extraordinarily long, carrying its mineral complexity with effortless persistence. A wine of rare harmony, this 2005 Haut-Brion is a benchmark of power and grace combined.

Product Highlights

Some wines don’t need selling. The 2005 Chateau Haut-Brion is one of them.

It has achieved the impossible: 100 points from every major critic. Robert Parker. Jeb Dunnuck. Antonio Galloni. James Suckling. Jane Anson. Lisa Perrotti-Brown. Wine Spectator. All in agreement – absolute perfection.

Jeb Dunnuck put it simply: “An absolutely perfect wine in every way… out of this world and certainly one of the finest wines I’ve ever tasted.”

We have just 24 bottles available, sourced direct from the Chateau itself, where they have been stored since they were first bottled.

Château Haut-Brion, in Pessac-Léognan, is not just a Bordeaux First Growth – it’s arguably the estate that invented fine wine as we know it.

Dating back to the 1500s, Haut-Brion broke new ground under Arnaud de Pontac, who introduced barrel ageing, controlled his own distribution, and priced his wine at a premium. It was the first true luxury wine – admired by Samuel Pepys, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and generations of philosophers, writers and leaders.

The sandy-gravel soils, the gentle slopes, and vines with more than 80 years of history create fruit that seems destined for greatness. And in 2005, those elements aligned to deliver a vintage that will be talked about for centuries.

Collectors still remember the frenzy when the 2005s were released. Antonio Galloni called the wines “absolutely thrilling.” Jane Anson declared it “one of the greatest vintages of the past 50 years.”

The 2005 Haut-Brion sits at the very peak of that vintage – a wine of extraordinary depth, balance and beauty, and a benchmark for what Bordeaux can achieve.

This small allocation comes direct from the cellars of Haut-Brion in Bordeaux. Perfect provenance. Perfect wine. Delivery to Australia begins 15 December.
