Recaredo, a family of grape growers and makers of quality sparkling wines and one of the twelve wineries that make up the Corpinnat collective brand, has become the first sparkling wine producer in Spain to be awarded 100 points by the prestigious publication Robert Parker Wine Advocate with its 2001 Recaredo Turó d’en Mota. This corpinnat, which will be released in the coming months, is also the first sparkling wine in all of Spain to obtain this score, which until now had only been achieved by nine Champagne houses: Salon, Bollinger, Louis Roederer, Krug, Jacques Selosse, Ulysse Collin, Cédric Bouchard, Egly-Ouriet and Philipponnat.
The Enoteca Turó d’en Mota de Recaredo collection was presented in October 2023 as part of the winery’s celebration of the twenty-fifth vintage from the Turó d’en Mota vineyard, an iconic plot in the panorama of Catalan viticulture. According to Ton Mata, a member of the third generation of the family, the first vintage of Turó d’en Mota de Recaredo was “the result of a fierce non-conformism” and the conviction that the sparkling wines of the Penedès could aspire to be “first-class sparkling wines that showcased the distinctive characteristics of the region in an unapologetic way”.
Enoteca Turó d’en Mota 2001 de Recaredo will be released soon in a limited edition of 150 bottles, all numbered, after being aged in the bottle for 264 months (22 years). For the Recaredo family, these limited-edition collections embody a passion for terroir craftsmanship and the ability to preserve an unshakable identity, forged through rigorous methods, hard work and patient passion.

The big news (in terms of quality, not in terms of volume) is the release of the 2001 Enoteca Turó d'en Mota, from the family reserve they kept of the single-vineyard Xarel.lo they started producing in 1999. This range was born 25 years after that first harvest, taking the long aging in bottle with the lees even further. It has 12% alcohol, with a pH of 3.05 and 5.5 grams of acidity. This vintage was still note certified organic or biodynamic. 2001 was an atypical year, perhaps the finest to date; I can say that because I tasted all 25 vintages together. It has a very complex and subtle nose that is nuanced and with great complexity of aromas, a mixture of ash, toasted bread, yeasts and smoke from the extended contact of the wine with the lees, hints of mushrooms, diesel, moss and spice, a little balsamic twist (camphor), baked brioche... It has a laced palate with very fine bubbles that give it texture and freshness but are barely noticeable. It has incredible complexity and elegance, really breathtaking. Bravo!! Unfortunately, this is a very limited release of only 150 bottles: the total production of that vintage was 2,770 bottles; they did the normal release and are keeping a handful of bottles at the winery, but this is it. The bottle I tasted was disgorged in April 2024 after 263 months in bottle (21 years and 11 months!). They released the 1999 and now comes this 2001. For now, they are not releasing the 2000. It's closed with a spectacular natural cork, worthy of the best wine they have produced to date and, to me, the finest sparkling wine from Spain. Tasting all of the potential "Enoteca" years, the released wines, from 1999 to 2009, at a vertical of 25 years of Turó d'en Mota in October 2023, this was clearly my favorite, followed by the 2003.

The 2001 Enoteca Turó d'en Mota that I tasted was still not officially released (so I had to give it a score range), but it was already clear that it was the finest vintage of the "potential" and real enoteca bottlings that we tasted (1999–2008). 2001 was an unusual year with scarce and irregular winter rains and more rain in the summer than during the rest of the year. The average temperature was slightly above average (15.8 degrees Celsius versus 15.6 degrees Celsius) and rainfall quite below (347 liters versus the average of 528 liters). The grapes were picked earlier, the 28th of August, with 3,866 kilos of grapes, or 21 hectoliters per hectare. The wine shows incredibly young, nuanced and elegant, finessed and spicy, with notes of curry and nuts, reminiscences of brioche and perfume (patchouli!) and hints of incense. It has very small bubbles that give it a velvety and silky texture, but it is quite structured. It has a pH of 3.01 and 5.9 grams of acidity. The aromas keep evolving, so notes of pine needles and ashes also appear. The regular 2001 Turó d'en Mota has, from day one, been my favorite of all vintages, and tasting all 25 of them together, it is still clearly my favorite of all. Bravo! The bottle I tasted was disgorged after 21 years and four months sur lie. This has great aging potential.
