Dave Brookes - Halliday Wine Companion

Featuring that combination of bright purple spume, fine bubbles and mousse that always brings a smile to the dial. Characters of juicy plum, dark cherry and blackberry fruits daubed with exotic spice, dried meats, licorice, boysenberry, chocolate and fruitcake. Enveloping flavours, pure, ripe berry and plum fruits, plenty of spicy nuance and gentle tannins. The MC Sparkling Shiraz is once again in fine form and makes for really enjoyable drinking.

It’s likely a sign of ‘end of days’ when I review sparkling Shiraz. I asked my partner what she thought about sparkling Shiraz and she said ‘It’s fucking horror, apart from having it with ham on XMAS day.’ Anyway, my take on sparkling Shiraz is that it’s a wine for perverts. Yes, it’s a good example of the style. It’s not bretty, which is so often the case, this one is clean and lively. I’m thinking plum pudding, liquorice, coconut, even a little mint and floral perfume, some spice, and a certain meaty character. The bubbles tickle gently, it’s also a bit saline, with a richness to fruit and a fine grainy grip on a finish of good length. Not peak sparkling Shiraz, but a very good one all the same.
