Tallarook
"As suggested by Francis, this is a very smooth wine - not overly woody and very good value"
When Byrne’s Tallarook Chardonnay first crossed our tasting bench, it came with no grand expectations. It was a new name to us, and Tallarook is hardly a region that gets talked about every day. But the moment we tasted it, that changed. What stood out straight away was its balance - creamy and gently nutty, with just the right amount of richness and freshness. It’s not overblown, and it’s not too lean either. It simply lands exactly where good Chardonnay should.
What made it even more compelling was the reaction from our tasting panel. Consensus does not come easily, so when the room agrees without hesitation, it’s a strong sign we are onto something worth taking seriously. This was one of those wines. It felt complete from the first pour - polished, generous and unmistakably well made.
The fruit comes from Tallarook, a small but seriously promising pocket near Nagambie Lakes and within reach of Heathcote. It’s a strong stretch of Victorian wine country, with respected producers nearby quietly proving just how good this part of the world can be. In the glass, that sense of place comes through in a Chardonnay that feels confident and composed, with real character and plenty of drinkability.
Then there is the name behind the label. Alex Byrne, a Young Gun of Wine finalist, is not short on talent, and this wine shows exactly why. It’s the kind of Chardonnay that easily earns its place at its usual $44 RRP, and with 94 points from Sam Kim, there is plenty here to back up first impressions. At our low price though, it becomes something else entirely - a smart buy, and a seriously satisfying one at that.
We may not have set out expecting much, but this is the kind of wine that changes plans. One taste in, and the decision was easy.

"Beautiful Chardonnay. Great drinking experience, from the fruit, the handling, and even a cheeky bit of ginger cream in there from the oak. I will be going back to grab more. I will also be watching this winemaker from now on, too!"
"I like this wine. Not only does it taste and look good, there is something "different" and "interesting" about it. Fresh, even with a bit of zing, it's not "big", but will pair up with many dishes - I had it with tandoori chicken."
"Really like this one"
"A bit of a fresh bite at first taste, but then the depth comes through"
