Lemon balm, flowering wattle and white sandstone. Young almonds, nashi pear and white melon. There is a swoon of delicious ripe fruit with slinky acidity and a spray of ocean tide. This continues to give an oatmeal creaminess and hint of grapefruit pith texture on the finish. It’s a celebration of fruit, with the coastal heart of its Italian roots shining through. A charming Vermentino with everything in place. Vongole, pippi or clams tossed through linguine is going to make your day with a couple of glasses of this. Drink now or cellar 2-3 years.

This delicious Italian variety is fast becoming a firm favourite among local wine lovers and surely headed for mainstream status. It is certainly well suited to the Hunter Valley and our warmer regions. It may surprise some of our more experienced (read older) wine lovers to discover that these grapes came from the legendary Roxburgh Vineyard in the Upper Hunter Valley. This was the source of some of Australia’s earliest cult Chardonnays. The variety is most certainly a grape which is suited to late picking, with harvesting taking place after the team had brought in all of their Hunter reds. Pale lemon, the nose weaves through notes of florals, apricot kernels, stone fruits and crushed nuts. It is actually worth giving this time in the glass, or even better a decanter. That will help to see all of its glories unfurl. The wine has a minerally support and a lingering finish. It is a fine example of the variety. Enjoy it over the next three to four years.

It’s a very Australian thing, by and large, to get lesser-sung white grape varieties, ‘alternative varieties’, and just make them like a lot of Australian riesling (nee Marlborough sauvignon blanc winemaking) with packet yeast, enzyme, filter somewhere in there, good sulphur hit, quick ferment in cold tank, tank time, filter, bottle ultra young – or something like that. While Big Wine School might say that is a good thing for clarity of the variety, it actually doesn’t do much for the variety at all. This is often done without actually tasting much in the way of the higher quality wines made from the varieties on hand, where a variance of technique makes them typically way more dynamic, complex and good. A thing. And I don’t know the full detail of winemaking here, but we get a very Vermentino 101 in the glass, whatever is happening. Fine for many, refreshing and clean. Neat and tidy. But there’s not much in the way of vermentino character here for me that I recognise across a global span of tasting. Lemon-lime, grapefruit, some slip to texture, maybe a touch of herb and spice, though it feels a touch tutti-fruitti and sweeter fruit spectrum than some. Easy to drink, regardless, and should be fun for summer. The resulting wine is a pleasing, dry white.
