Gamay is often seen as Pinot’s poorer cousin but I have to admit I’m a huge fan of it, whether grown within the bounds of Beaujolais or elsewhere. The Rising example is lovely, showing that same confectionery and strawberry note as the Pinot but with some slightly different, additional characters: raspberry, beetroot and tomato leaf, plus a touch of stemminess. There’s some wonderful fruit sweetness on the palate which makes it a lovely wine to sip or slurp, with a very pleasant mouthfeel and great acid. Yummo.

An uprising of gamay in Australia. This sits well. It’s sweet fruited but crunchy to dry things out. A good dose of spice joins in too. Touches of smoked paprika there. Dried and fresh red cherry. Cranberry drink. Some raspberries popped in soft water and made into a swirled natural cordial of sorts. This is a pretty wine, imbued with lovely, detailed character, ending up soft and slick and fun to drink.

50/50% destemmed and whole bunches. A light, bright cherry brick colour. Subtle aromas of just-ripened cherries and cranberries together with a touch of cardamom and white pepper. Fills out nicely on the compact, gently grippy palate. I can see this opening up nicely over the next six months or so.
