This classic sweet wine of Mount Horrocks is powerful, deeply scented and flavoured. Lots of creme brûlée, toffee apple, sugared almonds, mandarin marmalade and cumquat freshness. A bit of truffle and white mushroom in there, too. Layers and slickness in texture, though the finish finds a brightness underlying. Decadent, but very well balanced. Top notch.

After tasting the 2024 Watervale Riesling and being suitably bowled over by it, I am extremely glad to have this 2024 Cordon Cut Riesling in front of me. Aromatically, the wine leads with rosewater and lychee, preserved lemon and wafts of rosemary, pressed roses and orange blossom. In the mouth, the wine is languid, sapid and fine; it penetrates the senses in a most poetic way and lingers on the tongue with spicy accents of paprika and peppercorn, star anise and even cilantro/coriander seed. What a beauty. 11.6% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Founded by Stephanie Toole in 1993, Mount Horrocks is in Clare Valley, with the Riesling vines lying in a warmer part of the estate encouraging richness. 'Cordon cut' is a complex, skilled process allowing the grapes to concentrate and still ripen on the vine. Typical Riesling notes of lime zest and kumquat on the palate. Unmistakably Riesling yet not at all petrol-y on the nose or palate. Great balance of sweetness, freshness, fine texture. Try with fruit-based desserts. 183g/l RS.
