Pretty as a picture! The Flint Rock Riesling never fails to delight when looking for a thirst-quenching, fresh, textural and floral Riesling. The nose is laced with a field of spring blooms, rock salt, and rose essence. A pirouette of minerality spins until the last sip. Lemon pith and lime blossom are grounded in taut limestone foundations. Racy acidity is partnered with chalky phenolics, painting a complete picture with long brush strokes. Effortlessly morish.

Great Southern is a standout region for Riesling, and Howard Park have bottled a strong example that punches well above its $30 price point. Sourced from the Porongurup sub-region, this shows impressive mineral presence alongside an unexpected approachability in its youth. Makrut lime leaf, lime skin, riverstone minerality and lemon peel lead the aromatic charge, giving way to savoury notes of Thai basil and lemongrass. It’s zesty and stony, with a lifted, refreshing feel. With air, pretty floral top notes of citrus blossom emerge, adding perfume and delicacy. The palate has excellent fruit weight and drive – lime juice, lemon oil, kumquat and citrus brine sit above those same savoury green herbals, while a streak of mineral tension runs through the core. It’s well structured yet already harmonious, with citrusy phenolics adding just the right amount of grip before preserved lime acidity stretches the wine to a long, mouthwatering finish.

It was a very early and compact vintage, resulting in wines of good fruit concentration and generosity, even with Rieslings such as this. Light lift of lemon rind and apple on the nose lead through to a palate that retains a crisp and refreshing appeal. A twist of lemon and an edgy zest complete a very tidy wine for drinking in the short term.
Very fresh and crisp, with bright fruity aromas of lemon peel, lime pith and chalk. The palate is light-bodied with striking acidity, a textured palate and notes of orange blossoms, river stones and sea spray. Very soft and precise.

This is essentially citrussy – and attractive for it – but there’s a pebble-like character to the finish, which elevates it. Lime, blackcurrant bud, lemon sherbet and whispers of fragrant herbs lead to the dry interest of the finish. Very good.

There’s a softness and immediate appeal here with dabs of lemon and lime, some lemon curd, too, adding a layer of texture. It’s quite restrained with almost soft acidity, although the finish is crisp and fresh. It’s delicate and pleasing.

The 2024 Flint Rock Riesling has more flesh and grip than some of the other examples from this producer today; however, the palate remains true to the hot/dry season that birthed it, in that it is lean, tightly coiled and closed. Still, there is plenty of approachable citrus fruit and brine to be getting on with here. It's a lovely wine. I like it. 12% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
