Dave Brookes - Halliday Wine Companion
Grenache sourced from Yalumba's resources of gnarled old bush vines. The colour is light and ruby-esque, hinting towards the wine's shape and form. There's a buoyancy to the aromatic profile. Redcurrant, raspberry and light red cherry fruits with hints of spice, twiggy bits, ginger cake, crushed stone, pressed wildflowers, charcuterie and earth. Ditto on the palate, which is spacious and flighty, different complexing characters flitting in and out of view; acidity bright and febrile with a composed, energetic, spicy, red-fruited mist marking its passage.

The 2023 The Tri-Centenary Grenache was only just tasted and reviewed, however it was included in the tasting here today. It looks brilliant in the lineup. I will not re-review it so soon, so the points remain static; however, it likely would move up a point or two if I were reviewing it for the first time here today. For context, the wine is more savory than many others alongside it, and akin to the 2011, it has pressed flowers and incense in profusion. It's an excellent wine.

The 2023 The Tri-Centenary Grenache spent 333 days on the skins, and the wine is very light in color in the glass. The vines were planted in 1889 in Vine Vale, which is predominantly deep sands. The wine is savory and driven by tannins derived from the grapes alone; there's no oak in this wine. The fruit is fine and perfumed, ethereal and translucent. Once the plunging during primary ferment finishes, the wine goes through malolactic fermentation, receives a little bit of sulfur but is then left in situ until the tank is emptied and ready for use the following vintage. This lovely wine offers wet rose petals, sumac, dry spice and exotic minerals. I'm looking forward to seeing this as an older wine. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Christina Pickard - Wine Enthusiast
As the vibrant cherry shade hints at from first pour, this Barossa Grenache—from over 130 year old vines—pops with bright red berry aromas underpinned by spicier, more herbal tones reminiscent of cocktail bitters. It's lightweight with a slippery texture and more primary red fruit and spice on the palate. It's a tasty, harmonious drop but it feels more cheerfully straightforward than the serious label and price tag implies.

Angus Hughson - Vinous
The 2023 Grenache The Tri-Centenary is an excellent effort for the vintage, with exotic, ethereal aromas of Campari, fennel seed and crushed spices with a touch of charcuterie in the mix. Its silky textures are moreish, opening with red cherry flavors before moving more into savory earth and spice notes accented by zesty acidity. This will be enjoyable over the short to medium term.
Winemakers Notes
After the Grenache grapes were hand-picked and fermented, the wine remained on skins post-fermentation for 250 days. This extended maturation contributes an even greater complexity and individuality to the wine..
