Beautifully presented Pinot Noir from Mornington. Aromas of sour cherry with a lifted raspberry nuance and a little mushroomy character that emerges slowly. A light bodied and seamlessly integrated palate but with tremendous power, driving to a penetrating finish. Savoury chalky finishing acidity keeps it heading in the right direction.

The nose gives aromas of dark cherries, sweet spices, dried herbs and lead pencil. The medium-bodied palate has finely balanced tannins and bright acidity, showing notes of wild raspberries, dried herbs, sweet spices and ferric earth. Very well integrated and perfumed with an underlying tension.

Red Hill. The vineyard planted in 1987. These wines are very delicate and fine-boned, and I reckon you either really like that sort of thing, or you may find it a bit light on. I’m usually in the former camp. Strawberry, mint, but also has this fine rosehip tea perfume, a little cedar and cinnamon spice. It’s light to medium-bodied, fresh and vibrant, the tannin offers a fine white pepper texture, and maybe a light pumice stone grip, and there’s also a suggestion of Campari and soda too, which I like. The finish is long and well-etched. It certainly has something of a cool alpine feel to it, almost to Pinot Meunier in a way. I find this wine charming and engaging, and quite different to your run-of-the-mill Pinot Noir.

You have to admire the winemaker. Faced with some delicate florals and herbals, he has decided to elevate them rather than wed them to overly ambitious oak. I’m not sure all makers would have been so disciplined. The result is a Pinot Noir very much alive, where the aromas positively sing reflecting their maritime, cool climate home. Red cherry, strawberry, pomegranate, rosehip and violet are nicely cut with dried herbs, briar and just a splash of vanilla. Autumnal notes among the red berries, spice and lifted florals are a real feature of the wine, the antidote to many Pinots ruled by overly ripe, sweet fruit. A fine tannin focus to the wine draws everything together nicely. Just drops off a little towards the finish but, nevertheless, that fruit is definitely worth celebrating.

Light ruby, hints of purple in the light. Red cherry, sarsaparilla and anise spice aroma. Tightly wound on the palate, red fruits and roses, hints of anise spice are all tightly bound by bright acid and fine, firm tannins. Good length to it and clean to the finish.

It comes out as rather racy with requisite cherries and spice, barely ripe strawberries and the distinctive wintergreen/minty/herbal note off this single block. The palate is lean with sandy tannins while acidity is in the driver’s seat, racing towards a fresh finish. Cool and lively.
