For The Paringa, this is a rather tight, almost pared-back style. I like it. It still has a core of stone fruit and lemon/grapefruit with zest, all doused with ginger spice and nuanced cedary oak, but the driving acidity keeps everything on a tight leash. It’s invigorating and delicious.

The nose is mineral and citrus-driven with delicate aromas of lemon peel, gunsmoke, orange blossoms and graphite. The medium-bodied palate has piercing acidity, giving complex notes of lime curd, grapefruit pith, flint and nectarines. Wonderfully complex and very good. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

If you want length of flavour, you’ve come to the right place. There’s plenty of sizzle on the finish here. White peach, steel, tonic water, crushed fennel, grapefruit and nougat characters talk their way confidently through the palate. There’s flavour but there’s also a deal of dare to the acidity on the finish, which is why I think it needs another 18 months or so in bottle. General cohesion though is excellent here.

The 2022 The Paringa Single Vineyard Chardonnay is driven by prodigious acidity in the mouth. The fruit is lovely, all pink grapefruit and white peach with crushed nuts; however, the acidity that binds it all together is pronounced, to say the least. I love the pristine clarity of the wine, but one does have to contend with the acid. Horses for courses, and all that. It had full malolactic fermentation and matured for nine months in oak. While this wine may be more complex than the 2023 Estate Chardonnay tasted beside it, I would choose the latter to drink now, due to its inherent balance and poise. Give this one a couple of years more before approaching it. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
