The wines from this producer push well above their pricing weight. Restrained iodine, purple flower and blue fruit notes. The finish shows hints of iron, with some kelp and its maritime lift, so intrinsic to the toothsomeness of the better wines of the Vale. Very, very good.

Offering gorgeous fruit purity with elegant complexity, the wine shows Black Doris plum, violet, clove and assorted nut aromas, leading to a silky-smooth palate that's succulent and fleshy. Wonderfully framed by fine-grained tannins, finishing persistent and structured.

All estate fruit, naturally, and all French oak for 14 months. Dark fruited and rich, supple and somewhat luscious, this is also impeccably balanced and layered, not letting heft get in the way of detail. Black plum, blackberry compote, Kalamata olive, licorice, worn leather, a maritime iodine/kelp note, some blue floral lilts. There’s tannic purpose, an explosion of flavour through the back palate and, while fuller of weight, it’s got a savoury slant and it finishes with verve. Very good.

Quality fruit from a top region and a great vintage. As they say in the classics, what is not to like. An opaque maroon colour here, the nose is redolent with coffee bean notes, chocolate, dried herbs, tobacco leaves and leather. There is some oak evident here, with cloves emerging. Beautifully concentrated with a fine line of acidity. A well balanced wine with silky tannins, there is excellent length. Enjoy this over the next ten years.

An opaque magenta here, the nose reveals notes of warm earth, dark berries, cloves, leather, spices, chocolate and aniseed, there is good intensity here, but it remains immaculately balanced at all times. Quite a meaty style. Lovely texture here, alluring and supple, with silky tannins and a very long finish. The palate sees notes of coffee grinds emerge. A beautifully structured wine with a persistent finish, this is ideal for drinking over the next six to eight years. Love it.

Lloyd Brothers, I feel is a producer that’s on the up. Rich, supple and succulent Shiraz here. There’s blue and black fruit, and iodine/seaweed thing, some biscuit spice, and a little mint. It’s full-bodied, offers some dry and sooty tannin grip, a gentle blood orange tang to acidity, and finishes long and saline. There’s also something of a peanut flavour in the mix too. In short, a very good and savoury expression of McLaren Vale Shiraz.

I know it’s a wine writer specific thing, but I must call out Lloyd Brothers for ‘best practice’ when sending samples. They email first to confirm you want them, and they put the RRP on the bottles. Little things, but gee it helps. This is a good release. It’s black and blue fruited, spicy, meaty, a little floral, with a seaweed top note. Medium-bodied, but dense, all the black olive and grilled meat with spice and a mix of black and red fruits, a little stalky whole bunch complexity, fine-grained peppery tannin, cool balanced acidity, closing with good length and a saline/savoury aftertaste. It’s very strong in that meaty Adelaide Hills Syrah style, so if you like that, I’m thinking you’ll like this.

Another ridiculously priced wine given the stellar quality. An almost cool-climate aura to the nose of iodine, boysenberries, olives, graphite and lavender. The tannins are a little obtuse, but this is worth buying for the nose and its whiff of sophistication alone. Superlative value.
