The 2021 Barbera d'Alba Scarrone Vigna Vecchia is endowed with tremendous depth and resonance. Black cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and chocolate are all dialed up to the maximum. The Vigna Vecchia is the most extracted of the Vietti Barberas. As such, it also retains the clearest link to the wines of the past. It's a fine effort to be sure, but it is not meaningfully better than the straight Scarrone.

With organic fruit from a vineyard planted in 1918, the Vietti 2021 Barbera d'Alba Scarrone Vigna Vecchia is super concentrated and dense. There's a lot of fruit weight to take in, yet the wine holds that volume with elegance and careful balance. The bouquet has opulent notes of baked blueberry, chocolate cream frosting, spice and black licorice. The wine's complexity rolls through a series of waves and swells. The tannins cover the entire palate, and the wine wears its 15.5% alcohol very nicely. Only 4,237 bottles were made.

As if staring into a purple void, this deep Barbera draws the attention immediately open with aromas of framboise liquor, dried violets and baking spice. Forward, fun and serious at the same time, the wine pops with tart cherry jam and wild herb flavors with vibrant acidity keeping the palate fresh. Drink nowâ2035.
Floral aromas with sandalwood to the black berry and black cherry character. Medium-bodied with firm and racy tannins. A succulent and bright finish. 50% of the vineyards were planted in 1918. From organically grown grapes. Vegan.

The 2021 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Scarrone is dense, plush and explosive. A rush of dark red cherry/plum fruit, mocha, licorice, spice, rose petal and a kick of French oak all build in the glass. Potent and quite deep, the Scarrone is another lights-out Barbera from Vietti. In recent years, the Scarrone has come along very well. Then again, these vines were planted in 1989, so they are no longer âyoung', just younger than the Vigna Vecchia, where the oldest vines date to 1918.

The organic Vietti 2021 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Scarrone presents lots of dark fruit, blackberry, toast, sweet spice and cinnamon. The fruit is on the syrupy side with a very fragrant and sweet bouquet. The wine is well executed and classic, like a poster child for a warm-vintage Barbera. The palate is very pleasing with glossy, velvety sensations and bright acidity. This is a well-built Barbera d'Alba that ages in barrique for 12 months followed by six months in botte. Production is 13,540.
Intense ruby red with purple highlights, almost impenetrable. On the nose there is lots of ripe plum, vanilla and some dark chocolate. The palate has lots of blackberry, is powerful, precise and structured, with a refreshing acidity, well integrated tannins, persistent finish.Reviewers: Othmar Kiem, Simon Staffler
Lots of black berries and black licorice on the nose with a medium body, very fine tannins and a fresh and vivid finish. Fine texture. From organically grown grapes. Vegan.
