Old PL, as he was known to all and sundry, was a mentor to so many Barossa winemakers. He was simply one of the great men of the Barossa. This is a wine demonstrating that the region is not all about Shiraz. In good years you get a wine like this – balanced, poised and powerful, with style. Loads of blackcurrant and dark chocolate with a thread of steely oyster shell adding to the tannin profile. Love it.

Restraint is a common thread through this range of releases, and it wholly applies here. Blackcurrant, milk chocolate, dried black cherry, tilled earth, black liquorice, and graphite lift from the glass with cohesion and seamlessness. The palate is powerful and intense but controlled. Black berry, black currant, cacao nib, espresso, dark chocolate, earth, graphite. It drives long through the mouth thanks to assertive grainy cacao and coffee-laced tannins and clean acidity. Excellent complexity, balance and power. One for the cellar.

2024 - Decanter World Wine Awards
An exquisite decadence of raspberry and cassis with an emergence of fragrant mint which encircles the lively acidity and underpins the generous tannins. Utterly delicious.

Matured for 18 months in 40% new French oak hogsheads. Blackberry, rhubarb and bilberry. Juniper, caraway and mint tea. A bramble of black fruit with graphite, charcoal and crushed onyx. The palate highlights raspberry and red fig with dusty tannins and acute acidity. This is firm and weighty with the Barossan signature stamp imprinted in its design. Lingering cinnamon and carob on the finish. You are in good hands here with quality fruit and a pedigree of winemaking. Drink now and will cellar well for 10-15 years. A perfect partner for roast beef and red wine jus.

Named in honour of Peter Lehmann himself, a renowned mentor, the fruit for this Cabernet Sauvignon is drawn from old vines from across a selection of Barossa sub-regions. It is bursting with aromas of peak-summer blackberries and cherries. Spicy and rich, there’s dark chocolate and sweet baking spices reminiscent of plum cake, fresh from the oven, served warm with a scoop of vanilla-bean ice cream. The opulence continues on the palate and I am delighted that this has been achieved without a hint of alcohol warmth. There’s an added burst of fresher raspberries and red currant flavours with fine tea-leaf tannins. This will age beautifully but is also a joy now; give it a vigorous splash into a decanter to release its potential.

Campbell Mattinson - The Wine Front
There’s a bit of rough and tumble to this wine. It’s smooth and svelte in general, but the tannin has some rumble to it; it’s not a flat sheet. Flavour-wise it’s the business: it tastes of ripe plums and blackberries, choc-mint, dark tobacco and malt, though it’s the choc-mint-plum combo that dominates. There substance to this wine but there’s also admirable freshness; it’s not overblown. This will mature well; it has the depth, and it has the goings on.

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Mentor has an attractive core of powerful, refined aromas of fruit pastille and gravel with a pretty lift of violet. This is a tightly packed and extractive style with firm tannins delivering a detailed, slightly rustic finish. The 2021 needs time to hit its straps.
