Deep and dense in the glass, with flashes of vibrant scarlet at the rim. Aromas of blackberry and cherry come through seamlessly, layered with complexity. The palate is fragrant and balanced, showing violets, redcurrant and darker black fruits, touched by herbs and a hint of chocolate. Fine Cabernet tannins carry through the Shiraz’s fruit sweetness, giving structure and lift. Youthful and vibrant, it’s an elegant and timeless blend from two of South Australia’s premier vineyards.

Stylish and complex, the wine shows blackcurrant, dark plum, toasty oak, vanilla and cake spice aromas on the nose, followed by a silky-smooth palate offering supple texture and beautifully melded tannins. GAR stands for the Great Australian Red, that amazing blend of Shiraz and Cabernet. Why hasn’t the rest of the world cottoned on to this? From two superb vineyards in their respective regions, bringing together the Hesketh and Hardy families, the wine spends time in quality French oak. Serious depth to be found here with dark berries and warm earth, notes of blackberries, bergamot, roasted meats, bay leaves and cassis. Dry herbs over spices, the palate moves more to licorice and cocoa powder. Fresh acidity, soft tannins, impeccable balance and very good length make this a ten year plus proposition.

GAR stands for the Great Australian Red and that red would be the Cabernet Shiraz blend that Aussies can call their own. A blend of Coonawarra Cabernet from Parker's Abbey Vineyard and McLaren Vale Shiraz from Hardy's Upper Tintara Vineyard in Blewitt Springs, this is a generous red wine that calls you back for more. Blackberries are laced with licorice and a touch of cola. A serious drink, soft spices mingle alongside some meatiness and charcoal with the oak that is a little obtrusive on opening. I don't mind that for now given it will develop nicely in the bottle based on my tasting over a few days. Fast forward and the fruit softens and the oak partners it beautifully. Give it some time and you'll be rewarded. All up, it's a great drink. Drink to eight years+

Coonawarra cabernet and McLaren Vale shiraz from the Parker Estate 'Abbey' and the Tintara vineyard, respectively. Plush aromas of cedar-framed blackberry and satsuma plum fruits with plenty of fine spice and notes of tobacco, licorice, dark chocolate and earth. Ripe and full bodied with chocolatey tannin grip and a finish stacked with dark and black fruits and oak spice that lingers nicely.

An interesting style here, blending 2021 Coonawarra Cabernet and McLaren Vale Shiraz. The G.A.R. Great Australian Red delivers impressive generosity of slick fruit with equal measures of mulberry, blackberry and blackcurrant with a touch of eucalyptus and spice. It ups its game on the palate with a more flamboyant flavor and a solid bed of chewy tannins. A good example to enjoy over the medium term.

"This is by name, a classic blend of Coonawarra Cabernet (Hesketh in Penola) and McLaren Vale Shiraz (Hardy in Blewitt Springs). Already developing nicely this is juicy and fruity with a little touch of oak and a brightly acid finish. Maybe needs 5 more years or, so mainly for the Cabernet to intergrate, then - if you have good storage conditions -drink until 2030-2035."
