Tasting Notes

Deep and dense in the glass, with flashes of vibrant scarlet at the rim. Aromas of blackberry and cherry come through seamlessly, layered with complexity. The palate is fragrant and balanced, showing violets, redcurrant and darker black fruits, touched by herbs and a hint of chocolate. Fine Cabernet tannins carry through the Shiraz’s fruit sweetness, giving structure and lift. Youthful and vibrant, it’s an elegant and timeless blend from two of South Australia’s premier vineyards.

Product Highlights

When we first planned the Biggest Week in Wine, we set a simple goal: to find the ultimate red. A pound-for-pound champion that couldn’t be beaten for value or flavour. This Hesketh G.A.R, crafted by a legendary winemaking team, is every bit the star we hoped for.

Hesketh has taken the Great Australian blend and asked themselves: How do we make it even better?

The answer - take each grape variety and source it from where it thrives best! That means:

Coonawarra Cabernet from Parker Estate’s Abbey Vineyard for structure, blackcurrant purity, and elegant tannins.

McLaren Vale Shiraz from Hardy’s Upper Tintara Vineyard in Blewitt Springs for plush, spicy, dark-fruited depth.

Two winemaking families. Two legendary regions. Two exceptional vineyards. One incredible wine.

The result is the 2021 Hesketh GAR Cabernet Shiraz, our Best Red of the year, and an absolute ripper of a wine showing all the best hallmarks of an incredible wine: Balance, generosity, and complexity.

Fantastic Bottle of Red. Highly

"Fantastic Bottle of Red. Highly Recommended."

Casie B. (5/5)

GAR Great Australian Red!

"This is by name, a classic blend of Coonawarra Cabernet (Hesketh in Penola) and McLaren Vale Shiraz (Hardy in Blewitt Springs). Already developing nicely this is juicy and fruity with a little touch of oak and a brightly acid finish. Maybe needs 5 more years or, so mainly for the Cabernet to intergrate, then - if you have good storage conditions -drink until 2030-2035."

Hesketh Cabernet shiraz 2021

"Good value Mc Laren Vale red and will buy more"

Alan R. (4/5)

Great drop

"This is a big, tasty Aussie red that’s both bold and easy to drink. It’s packed with dark fruit like blackberry and plum, with a nice hit of spice and a little herbal edge to keep it fresh. The tannins give it some grip without being too heavy, and the finish hangs around with a mix of fruit and peppery spice."

Darryl R. (5/5)

Great shiraz for the price on sale

"We bought it on sale so it was a great purchase. It is quite smooth on the palate and the flavours linger for a while. Not sure I would price full price though. Otherwise a great wine for an everyday meal."

Renata P. (5/5)

Good but a little unusual

"I wasn't sure what to expect as this was my first tasting of a Cab Shiraz. It was a pleasant wine but not as good as its separate parts in my opinion."

Peter N. (3/5)

Fabulous value drop!

"A lovely Cabernet Shiraz blend with the right proportions - mainly Cabernet. Smooth, full-bodies - but not too intense. Loved by the entire table especially considering the price-value proposition."

Anthony B. (5/5)

A very nice blend of

"A very nice blend of shiraz and cabernet. Have ordered more. Highly recommend to buy on special."

John G. (5/5)

GAR

"Nice wine. Needs plenty of time, so if opening now, decant for 4 hours + and you will be rewarded. Recommended"

Gavin R. (4/5)

A little more beauty rest

"Giving this wine a few more years quietly in the dark to work its magic. I am sure it will well worth the time."
