The 2021 Croizet-Bages shows off the more understated side of Pauillac to great effect. Crushed flowers, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco open first in the bouquet. Perfumed and light on its feet, with understated persistence, the 2021 is super-classy. Bright, red-toned fruit, mint, spice and incense linger on the delicate, articulate finish. This is just beautiful.

Hazelnut chocolate, berries, red plums and sweet baking spices. Quite fluid and elegant on the palate with a medium body and some tight but fine-grained tannins. Not a year for much concentration but there is good length and finesse at the end.

Some firm tannins and focus to this wine, with blackcurrant and spice character. Medium body. Lightly chewy finish.

Bright red fruits on the nose and palate, this has a real gentle charm, lightly framed, such silky delicate but also grippy tannins that are so well integrated. I like the slightly bitter sour cherry flavour and the overall texture with weight and structure in the mouth. Great minty cool freshness throughout, with good intention and focus. Tense and tight at the moment though feels so clean. Good potential here. I love the Cabernet aspects on show.

The 2021 Croizet-Bages is deep, fleshy and super-expressive. Dark red cherry, blood orange, chocolate and spice infuse the 2021 with lovey complexity to match its supple, understated personality. This mid-weight Pauillac has a ton to offer.

Dark ruby core, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim. A fresh bouquet of red cherries, a touch of cranberries and some vanilla. Light-bodied, dark cherries on the palate with integrated tannins, cloves and nougat on the finish, ideal with food.

The 2021 Croizet-Bages has a light cedar and violet bouquet. There is no greenness here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity and graphite-tinged red fruit. I confess to having low expectations on approaching this, but you know, I think it’s a well-made Pauillac that should offer drinking pleasure over the next 8–12 years.

Winemakers Notes
Château Croizet-Bages, a classified growth in the 1855 classification, owes its name to the Croizet brothers, emblematic dynasty of the Médoc, who created the estate in the 17th century in the heart of the famous hamlet of Bages in Pauillac. Château Croizet-Bages received special recognition at the 1878 and 1889 universal exhibitions, as symbolised by the gold medals on the label.
Wine merchant in Paris, Monsieur Paul Quié, already owner of another estate in Haut-Médoc and passionate about wine, clearly saw the potential of this classified growth when he acquired it in 1942. He renovated the vineyard with enthusiasm and patience.
His son Jean-Michel, and his children, still combine today experience and modern winemaking. Château Croizet-Bages is a generous, opulent, expressive wine with a very powerful bouquet reminiscent of black fruit, spice, and cedar, accompanied on the palate by a fine tannic texture.
Key Points
- Family owned and managed
- A new phase of renovation has started across the entire estate, it should be completed in 2024
- Same family owner of Bel Orme Tronquoy de Lalande and Rauzan-Gassies
