If this wine auditioned for a role in the film adaption of Remains of the Day it would get the part in a heartbeat. It’s just so exquisitely well mannered. Ultrafine tannin, perfectly ripened fruit, the line of acidity placed just so. Even the oak wraps smokily around the herb notes, as if to ensure that they don’t appear too loud. This mid-weight cabernet would make the perfect butler to the finest of meals.

Deep ruby red colour. Blackberry, bramble, and bay leaf all fill the aromatic senses. Medium weight, graphite notes add contrast to the sweet berry fruit whilst a herbal layer fills towards the finish. Tannins are supple and very approachable, making this medium bodied red a real crowd pleaser. Drink now to 2035

The understated 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Great Western displays plush aromas of mulberry and blackberry with a faint edge of crushed leaves. It is midweight, with a fleshy core of blackberry and cedar flavor backed by a generous twist of tannins. Notable integrity and balance will see this wine drink well over the medium term.

The 2021 Great Western Cabernet Sauvignon is leafy and vibrant on the nose, with aromas of pomegranate, raspberry, licorice, black pepper, anise and nori. In the mouth, the tannins create an angular shape around the fruit, which is, as the nose promised, silky. Overall, the palate feels firm and defined by its tannic presence rather than by bright fruit, but it certainly cuts a serious shape in the glass. It is smart and leafy/herbal, a class act for $25AUD. 14% alcohol, sealed under Stelvin.

Given the vintage and producer, I’m surprised this is not better. Maybe it’s just me. A bit charred, reductive and peppery, briary with dark fruit. Kind of gummy and lacking in depth, chewy and not very long. I’m not digging this at all. At present it’s all arms and legs and hard edges. Maybe it will come good.
