Ulrich Sautter - Falstaff
Aromas of toasted hazelnut, lemon and tangerine, steamed corn kernels. On the palate, this is a wine with great intensity, the vibrant acidity is densely intertwined with fine phenolics, a smooth, supple texture and a penetrating minerality. A powerful, youthful wine, yet not massive, with a hint of the richness of nuance that lies behind the gripping tension.

Bottled in May 2022, Bonneau du Martray's 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with aromas of crisp Anjou pear, peach and nectarine mingled with white flowers, clear honey, nutmeg, mint and fresh bread. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, it's bright and concentrated, with terrific depth at the core, and a long, saline finish. Seamless, intense and complete, this elegant, precise white Burgundy is built for the cellar.

The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is interesting to taste, as it is starting to move into its next phase of life. Some of its early richness has softened, revealing an airy, taut white endowed with notable precision. Dried lemon peel, sage, mint, pine and crushed rocks open nicely in the glass. There’s lovely subtlety and nuance to explore. I would not open the 2020 yet, as it is very clearly in a transitional state. This was the first vintage in which the domaine incorporated larger 350L and 500L barrels.

The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru was bottled in May 2022. It has a light bouquet at first, gaining intensity with time, scents of beeswax, chalk and touches of Mirabelle. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Quite tensile, backward and fine salinity. There is a pleasant residual spiciness here that comes through on the finish. The remainder of barrel maturation will lend more depth and weight and it will benefit from 3-5 years in bottle.
