The Deep Woods Estate Story
Deep Woods Estate was founded in the northern end of the beautiful Margaret River region of W.A in 1987. It changed hands in 1992 when the Gould family purchased the winery, and was sold again in 2005. Today, it is part of the Fogarty Wine Group (they also own Lakes Folly, Millbrook and Smithbrook wines). The property nests on a ridge overlooking a sea of Jarrah and Marri trees, hence the name Deep Woods. It boasts 16 hectares of sustainably-managed, low-yielding vineyards segregated into 12 blocks planted to Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Winemaker Julian Langworthy employs traditional and state-of-the-art techniques to craft small batches of wines of impeccable quality under several different labels. The Deep Woods Reserve label is the ultra-premium range made entirely from estate-grown fruit. The Estate range brings beautiful varietal character and vibrancy while offering excellent value for money, whilst the Ebony, Ivory and Harmony label uses estate and locally sourced fruit. Stylistically they range from complex, zesty, nutty Chardonnays through to cassis and chocolate Cabernet Sauvignons displaying Margaret River typicity.
Why's this wine for you?

The Deep Woods story is all about Julian Langworthy. If you’re a regular Wine Collective member you would have heard us talk a lot about him - he’s one of our absolute favourite winemakers.

When you have this James Halliday Winemaker of the Year and Jimmy Watson winner running the show, then you've already got a head start - he is indisputably one of the top winemakers in the country and with Deep Woods he is at the very top of his game.

They show several ranges of wines, from Estate to Reserve Grand Selection, but the Redlands series is where you can find some real value for money.

‘Deep intense reds and violets. Bold Cabernet notes here, with blackfruits, cigar box characters, chocolate, cassis and more. Terrific nose. The palate is supple and the tannins on the finish are very fine. Juicy youthful flavours, but there is some serious intensity here, right through to a long and impressive finish. Delicious now, but no issue in cellaring it over the next four to five years, even longer. Like this a lot.’ 93 points, Ken Gargett, Winepilot

How's it taste?
Seriously bright and vibrant with purple hues, redolent plums and high notes of star anise. Silky fruit driven palate with eminent drinkability.

If Marg River Chardy is a world famous, and a much loved style, then Marg River Cabernet is even more so. Again, this does not pretend to knock the very top examples off their perch (and nor is it priced to do so), but rather this is delicious drinking, full of flavour and great value. Deep intense reds and violets. Bold Cabernet notes here, with blackfruits, cigar box characters, chocolate, cassis and more. Terrific nose. The palate is supple and the tannins on the finish are very fine. Juicy youthful flavours, but there is some serious intensity here, right through to a long and impressive finish.
