Outrageous colour – wonderful deep purple, with a rich red rim. This is magnificent. Dark fruits infused with black pepper, woodsy spices and juniper set the flavour profile. The full-bodied palate is complex and detailed. Oak adds another layer of depth, yet there's a controlled vibrancy and freshness throughout.

Fruit sourced from various peninsula sites, co-fermented with 5% viognier and aged 11 months in used French barriques. A vibrant garnet/purple hue; a core of ripe plums, with a flash of cloves, cinnamon, all warm spices and florals. The palate is savoury, with an appealing succulence bolstered by supple tannins and terrific freshness. It seems vintage '19 suits shiraz from this region.

The Mornington Peninsula, east of Melbourne, is one of Australia's great Pinot regions, which makes this Shiraz, then, all the more remarkable. From an excellent vintage, and with a touch of Viognier, this offers beautifully evocative aromatics. With cool crunchy-leafed autumn vibes, it's like a just-stocked pantry of blueberry and currant preserves and peppercorns, bunches of dried herbs, roses and lavender hanging overhead. There's a whip crack of acidity on the palate, an end-of-harvest edge. Sappy, ultrafine tannins add a lovely textural element. Tucked in, with focus, vibrancy and personality, this would pair with roast lamb or grilled portobellos.

All the Paringa Estate wines are so neat; so well grown and made. This is centred with cherry-plum flavour but the edges toss peppercorn, deli meat, apricot skin and cedar characters into the mix, and in the most engaging of ways.

This is rich and ripe but comforting, like a blanket on a cold winter's night. There's a well of cherry, plum, chocolate, mint, cedar and some savory spice. The palate is plush and satiny in texture, with a good lick of oak influence. The tannins are powerful but they don't overwhelm. It's a weeknight wine for the big red lovers in your life.

Every so often, it's instructive to see how the sub-$15 wines stack up. Paringa's 2019 Shiraz offers modest hints of mint to offset jammy blackberries on the nose, while the medium-bodied palate is supple and easy to drink. No, there's no great depth or complexity, but for the price, it's a credible effort that avoids excess sweetness/ripeness.
Wine Spectator
Leans into notes of toast, cedar and mahogany, with thick, drying tannins and black tea–infused dried berry flavors.
James Halliday - Halliday Wine Companion
Full bodied and seems to have high alcohol. Made to a price, massive invasion of flavour.
