A wine highly sought after for the loves of Clare Valley Shiraz. It stands apart from the rest with an intoxicating perfume of black berries and unfettered charm. A touch of whole bunch and open fermentation this is a lively and expressive example of fine Clare Valley Shiraz fruit. Fresh bay leaf, tarragon and nettle sits behind blackcurrant, mulberry and licorice. Maturation in 18 months of French oak adds the clove, cinnamon and black peppercorn spice. There is a gentleness to the weight and a glide of soft tannins to finish. Drinking very well

Deep magenta in colour, the nose offers notes of cloves, leathure, spices, black fruits, dry herbs and a hint of dark chocolate. Real depthe of flavour here. A fins Clare Shiraz. Good concentration, fine valance and excellent length, there are very fine tannins. More chocolate notes emerge on the palate. This has a good decade ahead of it, but lots to enjoy over that time

A fine Clare Valley Shiraz which already has the benefit of half a dozen years development, quite amazing when one considers the price. It hails from an excellent vintage for the region. The colour is a blue/black centre with a magenta rim. The nose reveals notes of kitchen spices, herbs, black pepper and sage, with mushrooms, smoked meats, chocolate and aniseed. There is grip here, but good focus, juicy acidity and fine tannins, through to a lingering finish. A wine with surely at least another six to ten years of providing pleasure ahead of it. Lots to like and for anyone wanting to experience the impact of ageing a wine, hard to go past this.

Well, look at this. A wine aged for six years, and released at a modest price. Blackberry, blackcurrant, aniseed/liquorice, tobacco and baking spice, a clove and pepper perfume. It’s medium to full-bodied, peppery and blackcurrant-laced, acidity is fresh but unobtrusive, with a dusty almost graphite feel to tannin, there’s some truffle-like richness, and it’s bright, albeit a little minty, with a long and fresh finish of excellent length. An almost alpine amaro feel to this wine, and I like it a lot. I must say.

Bright red plum melds with new leather first off, followed by dried herbs, blackberry, milk chocolate, clove, game meat and mocha. It all comes together with air, allowing the leather notes to critically integrate and the fruit/savoury notes to work together. The palate is juicy and medium to full bodied with an emphasis on plum, blackberry and chocolate with leather, gentle spice, dried herbs and mocha in support. There’s good structure to this wine. The tannins are firm, grainy and drenched in the bitter mocha notes and the acid is plum-laced and persistent. This is gamey and plush with nice complexity and structure at such a modest price point. A food wine, for sure, and one that won’t break the bank.

A sturdy mix of boysenberries, black cherry and plums. There is an undercurrent of potpourri and dried rosebud. Soft licorice and raspberry tea. Carob, mace and cinnamon powder lead the spice charge with a lovely even line of smooth tannins and equal weighted acidity. Some red clay and persimmon finishes what is a very well integrated wine in a good drinking window. This maintains its red berried freshness and feels silken and continuous. Drink with chicken and chorizo and loads of soft red peppers.
It’s strange to describe a four-year-old red as a work in progress but that’s how Peppertree Vineyard shiraz feels. Maybe it’s the sinewy tannins that meld so nicely, but continue to hold the wine oh so tight and firm. Maybe it’s the sense of refinement and reserve. It’s not singing full throttle, just yet. But the stage is set. Plum, raspberry, mulberry (more so than bold, blackberries) and gentle spice contribute to a feeling of elegance. A sweet core of fruit joins with earth, briar and a light dusting of toast, vanilla oak: controlled and respectful of the fruit. It’s all there drinking well now and with plenty of time up its sleeve. Impressive for the price.

A quintessential Clare shiraz from dry-grown vineyards, this wine has plenty of ripe black and blue-berried fruit aromas, with violets, black pepper and richer, savoury sarsaparilla notes. On the palate it’s ripe and juicy but still elegant in its Clare way, with black-berried fruits and milk chocolate notes. It’s soft, smooth and supple with firm tannins, and has time to go in the bottle still if you can bear to wait. What more definitive combination is there than shiraz and lamb? A couple of cute little grilled cutlets on the BBQ with a splodge of salsa verde would be my match made in heaven.
