A little more new oak and barrel selection has produced an exceptional wine from this cooler season in Margaret River. Aromas of red currant, dried herbs and subtle bay leaf with a seashell-like minerality. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a firm structural core of chalky tannins and fine-grained oak. Supremely balanced and poised. Will certainly come into its own with extended cellaring.

Jane Faulkner - Halliday Wine Companion

Heady aromas of fragrant just-tilled earth, a touch of peat, new leather, woodsy spices and even florals get the palate ready for something lovely. While still lively with fresh mulberries and spiced blackberries, this is starting to show a smidge of complex tertiary characters. Woodsy spices, some cedary/charry oak – not much just some for seasoning – as the supple mid-weighted palate comes covered in textural tannins, which extend out to a long finish. A lovely wine.

Medium-deep ruby with some development evident; the bouquet of new leather, woodsy/smoky/earthy and sousbois characters, roses and violets peeping through too. The wine is medium-full bodied and starting to mellow nicely, soft textured and developing tertiary flavours, the tannins fine and powdery running the length of the palate. 95 points - GOLD, Huon Hooke. 9 January 2024

Blackcurrants, plum paste, orange rind, spice box and vanilla on the nose. It’s full-bodied, creamy and spicy, with plush tannins and attractive sweet oak and spice flavors lingering.

The 2019 season in Margaret River was cool and wet—although not the relentless wet of 2021, nor the relentless cold of 2017—and the wines from this season are generally quite aromatic and detailed. Here, the 2019 Queen of the Earth Cabernet Sauvignon leads with dried mint and red gravel, cassis, cinnamon cassia, dried tobacco and brine. In the mouth, the wine is framed by its time in oak, to the point where it becomes somewhat impossible to separate élevage from fruit. Previous vintages have spent up to three years in oak, so one assumes that this vintage is not too far removed from that. The finish, minutes later, is still characterized by grainy tannins and toasty oak characters. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Queen of the Earth is refined thanks to fresh aromas of red currant and crushed leaves against a backbone of blackberry and fine-grained oak. It is a lighter-weight style with supple tannins, juicy fruit pastille flavors and firm-edged, angular acidity. Length is good, although a drying finish with prominent cedary/earthy complexity suggests a medium-term drinking window.
