Medium-bodied, this has an exceptional elegance and lightness of touch for this warm region. At seven years of age, it is brimming with blackberries, blueberries and blackcurrants, the oak very discreet. The impressive tannin structure is also understated but deftly anchors the wine in the long, elegant finish.

One of the good things about Mike Bennie covering the Clare Valley for Halliday, is that I now get to review some wines that I didn’t often get to see. This is a very stylish and good wine, and released with six years of bottle age, I feel it’s just falling into its slot. Red fruit, in particular has this bright redcurrant flavour, a little cedar and tobacco, aniseed and aromatic herbs. It’s medium-bodied, crisp and, well, kind of ‘claret-like’, fine dusty tannin grip, some ripe tomato in the mix (working as a positive here) a certain freshness and energy, with a finish that offers both brightness and length. Gee, this is nicely done. Such a charming wine.

Dark chocolate and blackcurrant with a subtle leafy lift open on the nose. The palate is refined and elegantly structured. Dark fruits with a subtle mintiness in the background. Chalky tannins and a gentle hit of oak add structure defining the palate through to its sustained finish. Has a thoroughly beautiful mouthfeel with all the components hanging together in a tidy combination.

Pitch-perfect medium weight and set to the order of luncheon Claret, so often sought for ease of drinking and freshness. The wine is imbued with cassis, blueberry, gum leaf and woody spice. A subtle overlay of wheatiness is a touch distracting and pulls back the finesse of tannin, but that should settle in with even more time in bottle. All up, good complexity and varietal intent here. Very pleasing drinking.

From a brilliant vintage for the region, this terrific Cabernet suggests that anyone ignoring how good that variety is from this region is doing themselves a disservice. Not to mention, this is a wine of brilliant value. A deep, dark garnet. This has a very attractive varietal nose, very Cabernet. Blackberries, dry herbs, chocolate, tobacco leaves, plums and aniseed. Six years development already, but it is still silky and fresh. There is power, balance and focus here, and yet elegance as well followed up by a firm tannic finish and persistent concentration. This has ten to twelve years ahead of it, but still offering delicious drinking now.

Restrained aromas of blackcurrant, black cherry, black olive, liquorice root and gravel straight up, followed by choc mint and a dusty oak nuance. Its six years in bottle have resulted in softness and cohesion. The palate is cooling and lifted, with black currant, black cherry, mint and wet gravel notes gliding through the mouth before an assertive hit of grainy tannins constricts the mouth into a linear frame, adding a mocha bitterness to the finish. Lovely coolness, restraint and line to this wine which is drinking nicely now. However, there’s some serious structure that will keep it unfurling nicely in a cellar over the next 5 or so years.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Sevenhill Vineyard, now with five years under its belt, is in a good place. It has ample and composed aromas of redcurrant and dusty earth with a red licorice kick. This is medium-bodied with chewy tannins and perky acidity. It’s still young and vibrant with a strong, tight finish. This needs time to flourish.

Black cherry, boysenberry and charcoal ash. Nyon olives, bitter chocolate and coffee grinds. A wisp of raspberry compote. Allspice and potting soil. Acidity is more assertive than expected on the palate and carries the sandy tannins across from front to back palate. There is a juicy quality with the firmness of savoury botte aged Cabernet. The chocolatey tones make for a satisfying sip at a humble price tag. Drink now or will age another few years. A nice wine to have with a skirt steak or black bean stir fry.
