Winemakers Notes
The history of Giodo in Montalcino begins in 2002, when Carlo Ferrini, one of Italy’s best-known winemakers identified his first hectare to purchase in the prestigious Brunello denomination. This first acquisition launched a new adventure and a fresh challenge, but one that was really the fulfilment of a long-held passion. Giodo name is a tribute to Carlo’s parents : Giovanna and Donatello.
Today, the winery, lying midway between Sant’Angelo in Colle and Sant’Antimo, relies on 5.5 hectares of vineyard. Here Ferrini planted the Sangiovese clones he had found to be most convincing over the years. The original nucleus of vines is dedicated to the production of the Brunello di Montalcino (2.5ha) and the younger ones to “La Quinta”, the Toscana IGT (3ha).
The Brunello is aged 30 months in 500-litre oak casks but also in 700 and 2,500-litre oak casks.
Both labels depict a human icon and a circle, which is a representation of respectively the “Sangiovese” and the winegrowing world.
On the Brunello’s label, the man is inside because Brunello di Montalcino wines are made with only one grape variety, the Sangiovese.
