Violets, new leather, plums, black cherries and menthol emerge from the glass in the 2013 Chateau Quintus. Vibrant and delineated in the glass, the 2013 impresses for its energy and nuance, both of which it has in spades. The style is soft and fruit-driven but there is excellent minerality and acidity as well lurking beneath. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Points: 90-92

James Molesworth - Wine Spectator

Ripe and pure, with a lovely feel to the plum, red currant and cherry fruit. The finish is long and harmonious already, featuring lingering chalk and bergamot notes. Features a pleasant tug of terroir at the very end. This looks to be the best vintage yet for this wine. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Tasted non-blind. —J.M.

A bright, chewy wine with orange-peel, cedar and plum character. Full body with a juicy palate and a medium finish. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. This has grapes from L’Arosse in it for the first time. Savory. Points: 89-90

The first vintage following the fusion of L’Arrosée with Tertre Daugay, but 2013 was a difficult year in the vineyard. The yield fell to 23.8hl/ha. This wine has a lighter body and weight with some sweetness on the mid-palate but a drying finish. There is a wisp of elegant red fruit yet the oak still dominates. For early drinking. The grand vin, the 2013 Quintus, which is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, has a dark ruby/plum color and an attractive nose of licorice, Christmas fruitcake, tobacco leaf and red and black currants. It is well-made, somewhat compact and narrowly constructed, but pleasant and best drunk during its first 7-8 years. This property was purchased by the owners of Haut-Brion and La Mission-Haut-Brion, along with their acquisition of nearby L’Arrosee. The estate used to be called Tertre Daugay, but now has been renamed Quintus.
