This wine is ripe and juicy, with full, soft tannins, jammy fruit and sweet plum flavors. It shows the acidity of the year with final notes of tobacco and smoke. —R.V

This blend of 50.5% Merlot and 49.5% Cabernet Franc will be aged in between 40% and 50% new oak and reached 13.9% alcohol. Licorice, earth, spice, floral and jammy black cherry are present in this soft, fresh, medium-bodied wine that ends with fresh red berries and minerality. 90-91 Pts

(a 50/50 blend of merlot and cabernet franc): Inky-purple. Spicy, chocolatey aromas of cassis and plum. Enters chocolatey and sweet, then turns more austere and unyielding, though with bright flavors of blackberry and dark cherry throughout. The mounting tannins leave the palate a bit astringent, but the finish is long and juicy. This property, previously known as Chateau Tertre-Daugay, was bought by Haut-Brion's owners in late June of 2011.

Its bigger sibling, the 2011 Quintus is a richer, broader, deeper wine displaying a similar character. Raspberry, cherry, lead pencil and mineral notes dominate this deep ruby/purple-colored 2011. Medium-bodied with sweet tannin and up-front appeal, it should drink well for a decade. There are high expectations for this new project of the Domaines Clarence Dillon (formerly known as Tertre Daugay). It will be interesting to follow the evolution of these wines given the brilliance of the winemaking team at La Mission-Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion.

A blend of 50.5% Merlot and 49.5% Cabernet Franc (although the latter represents one-third of the plantings.) There are only about 17,000 bottles of the Grand Vin. It displays fine intensity on the nose with ripe black cherries, cassis and a touch of dark plum, the Cabernet Franc taking time to emerge from under the aromatic carapace of the Merlot. The palate has a sweet opening with saturated tannins, crisp acidity, the Merlot again quite powerful and sinewy with a long sweet tail on the finish that is just slightly attenuated. I would like to see more expression of the Cabernet Franc, although perhaps that might come with time. Tasted April 2012

The inaugural vintage of Château Quintus, with only ex-Tertre Daugay fruit used. Leather, plum and spice aromatics are at the fore. The palate is round but with a fresh, chalky, terroir note, and there is a pebble-sucking finish. It was early days but the wine is honest and pleasing. The oak is just about integrated. It's ready for drinking now. Drinking Window 2019 - 2026

Drink 2018-2026 Formerly Tertre Daugay, thus creating the fifth grand vin for Domaine Clarence Dillon, hence Quintus. 15 ha planted, of which two-thirds Merlot (started picking 12 September) and one-third Cabernet Franc (finished picking end September). This vintage is a 50/50 blend and only 28% went into Quintus, 28% in Dragon and the rest declassified. Deep black cherry crimson. Dark, rich and spicy. Very fresh, more marked acidity than the Dragon. Silky tannins. Not as much fruit as the Dragon, it seems. Longer though. Tight and lively and not at all dry. Good length too. The Dragon is biting at its heels. (JH) 13.9% 16/20

Winemakers Note

In June 2011, Domaine Clarence Dillon, acquired a beautiful estate in Saint-Emilion, today renamed Château Quintus. This wine is taking its natural place within the Domaine Clarence Dillon family, as an equal alongside the red and white wines of Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion, thereby becoming the 5th child in this illustrious family. In October 2013, Château Quintus in turn acquired the neighbouring property, Château L’Arrosée, and these two exceptional estates are now united in order to produce one of the very finest wines of Saint-Emilion. Merlot represents 66% of the surface in production and the rest, 26% is planted with Cabernet Franc and 8% with Cabernet Sauvignon. Château Quintus also produces a second wine : Le Dragon de Quintus While looking at the location of the estate, one knows that Quintus benefits from an outstanding terroir, on the top of one of the AOC hill, hillside and foot of the slope; as weel as its most prestigious neighbours such as Ausone, Pavie or Angélus. In addition, this terroir has been producing wine since the early 14th century; while the former estates were called “Daugay” and “Larauzet”. In the last two centuries, the wines have always been among the best wines of Saint Emilion : Part of « Premiers Crus (First Growths) of Saint-Emilion » in all Féret guides from 1850 to 1949… > Daugay and L’Arrosée were among the elite of Saint-Emilion wines « At Daugay, Alezay sells his 1844 and 1846 wines for 500 francs… » « Daugay is one of the 14 Saint-Emilion wines most sought by wine brokers… » (H. Enjalbert, from the Lawton family archives) > This price is exactly the same as that of the wine produced by Mr. Cantenat, now Château Ausone…. « One can not imagine a more beautiful situation for an estate, or one more favourable for the production of a First Growth wine (…). » Dumas (F.-G) et Lallemand (Ch.), Les Grands Vins de Gironde, Paris, 1899
