Still quite tight-knit on the nose, mid-weight with gentle, rather lovely cherry fruit and a spicy vestige of the firm tannins that were the hallmark of the 1983 vintage at the outset. Holding together well, 10-20 years ahead of it.

2016 - Decanter World Wine Awards

Spicy currant and cinnamon aromas, with prune, black fruit and candied dried fruit underlying. Complex palate of herbs, mint, and deep chocolate fruit, sweet ripe plums, bold, tightly-knit tannins and a good long leathery finish. Award: Silver - DWWA 2016

Graham is another great port house, producing one of the deepest-colored and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their tawnys are quite good rather than exceptional, but their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous. The 1983, like most vintage ports, seems more forward than normal but has a great depth of very ripe, viscous, unctuous, plummy, tarry fruit and significant tannin in its long finish. It is black-purple in color. I doubt that it will be either as profound or as long-lived as the great 1977, but is is certainly one of the top two or three ports of this vintage, and better than the excellent 1980.

Jancis Robinson

Transparent ruby. Fully evolved with beautiful round satin texture (all tannins fully dissolved) with a very winning combination of liquorice and haunting sweet red fruit. Very gorgeous. This is clearly a great vintage to enjoy now.  Score: 18.5/NaN

Not as intense a crimson as the 1980. Quite a wide colourless rim. Burnt, sweet, almost charred nose. The overwhelming impression is one of slightly simple sweetness. Can’t see any tannins left here – until the very end. Jewel-like – sort of rubies in a glass. Exceptionally rich and on the finish quite delicate in fact. Very slightly simple with the alcohol just nudging in on the finish. Score: 18/NaN

Still full and showing well with a rich ripe fruit character and long finish. Excellent quality. Award: Bronze - DWWA 2011
