Our History
Eduardo Chadwick’s father, Alfonso Chadwick Errázuriz, had a passion for vineyards, and was also an accomplished polo player. And it is a fitting tribute that the beloved field where he once played polo is now planted to the grapes that go into the wine named in his honour.
Don Alfonso established Chile’s first wine brokerage in the early 1930s. And in 1942 he bought the 300-hectare Viña San José de Tocornal estate and its vineyards in the Alto Maipo Valley. Even then the grapes grown there were considered exceptional. When the property was later divided, the family retained their home and 25 key hectares of land, including Don Alfonso’s polo field.
Alfonso Chadwick was considered a visionary in his time, particularly in the modernization of the Chilean wine industry. In 1983, he took control of Viña Errázuriz, which was founded by his ancestor Don Maximiano Errázuriz in the Aconcagua Valley in 1870, and asked his son Eduardo to work with him to restore the winery to the prestige it once had.
In addition to his passion for wine, Alfonso Chadwick is considered one of the best polo players in the history of Chile. He was the captain of the Chilean National Team for many years and led his team to win 19 open championships, just one shy of the Guinness Record. His passion for this sport was such that he laid his own polo field at the family estate in the Maipo Valley.
After Alfonso Chadwick passed away in 1993 his son Eduardo succeeded him, continuing his great legacy, passion for wine, and pursuit of excellence.
The Wine
Viñedo Chadwick represents the Chadwick family’s long cherished desire to honour the memory of the late Don Alfonso Chadwick Errázuriz with an Ultra Premium red wine showcasing the ancestry, tradition, and expertise of the Chadwick-Errázuriz family for producing fine wines reflecting the family’s passion for excellence. The aim is to make an elegant wine with freshness and purity, showing the Maipo Valley at its highest level. Although Don Alfonso never saw the finished wine, he is remembered with every bottle of Viñedo Chadwick.
The first vintage of Viñedo Chadwick (1999) was released to great success in 2002. Its second vintage (2000) would later make history on 23 January 2004, when the Berlin Tasting took place.
Since its inaugural release Viñedo Chadwick has consistently received the highest praise and recognition throughout its entire history, including being Robert Parker’s highest-rated Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile for five consecutive vintages.
The 2014 vintage marked a milestone for Chilean wine history, as well as for the family winery. On May 2016, Viñedo Chadwick 2014 scored a perfect 100 points, becoming the first Chilean wine to achieve the world’s highest recognition.
Perfect Score
The vineyard has been divided into several blocks which are monitored independently and harvested in the cool morning hours to preserve fruit quality. Lots are gently crushed and then fermented separately between 28° to 31° Celsius to maximize their character. This is followed by an extended maceration of up to thirty days depending on the development of the individual lots.
The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, in our underground cellars. Each vineyard lot is aged separately to maximize blending options. Racking takes place four or five times during ageing and is done from barrel.
Blending decisions are made very late in the ageing process just before bottling. The aim of this is to give us the most options for the final blend and to make the best blending decisions after the individual lots have developed their own unique characteristics in barrel. This gives us more control each year over the quality and character of the final wine.
