Serra i Barcelo

Josep Serra is a name synonymous with excellence in winemaking in Spain. As a fourth-generation winemaker of the renowned Serra-Barcelo family property in Montsant, Josep continues to uphold the family's legacy of producing exceptional wines. The family's roots can be traced back to the Ribera del Ebre, the picturesque valley between Montsant and Terra Alta, where they have been passionately cultivating grapes for generations. At the heart of their vineyards lies a 3-hectare plot of Garnatxa Tinto, a signature varietal of the region. Here, Josep carefully crafts each bottle with precision and expertise, infusing it with the rich flavors and aromas of the land. But his talents do not end there. With an additional 9 hectares in the neighboring DO Terra Alta, Josep also produces Garnatxa Blanca and Tinto, showcasing his versatility as a winemaker. Before taking the helm of the family business, Josep honed his skills as a winemaker at the renowned Falset co-op in Monstant from 1994 to 2002. He then moved on to Mas Perinet, a bodega in both Priorat and Montsant, where he continued to perfect his craft. While Mas Perinet was eventually sold to a big US company, Josep's dedication to producing exceptional wines remained unwavering. During his time at Mas Perinet, Josep also worked as a consultant at Godelia in el Bierzo, where he oversaw viticulture and winemaking. It was during this time that he began to develop his two small family projects: Octonia Garnatxa and The Montsant Vineyards. Located in the quaint village of els Guiamets, just west of Capçanes, Josep's Montsant bodega is a true gem. The 2.2 hectares of land, which are within the footprint of Vila Capçanes, were planted in 1940 and have been organically grown ever since. The two plots, 'Els Ponts' and 'Mas d'en Fornos', face each other across a small valley, with varying elevations between 350-500 meters. The vines are planted in steep, stony terraces at a density of 5000 vines per hectare, reflecting Josep's commitment to quality over quantity. The Mediterranean climate and the influence of the nearby Ebro River contribute to the unique terroir of the Montsant region, resulting in wines with distinct characteristics. In addition to the expected limestone, the vineyards also feature granite, ferrous clay, sand, slate, and pink 'Margas', adding layers of complexity to each bottle. With over 25 years of experience in the industry, Josep Serra is a master of his craft. His wines are a true reflection of his passion, expertise, and deep connection to the land. With each sip, one can taste the rich history, culture, and tradition that have been passed down from generation to generation.
