The Southern Highlands wine region is set in a breathtaking landscape of rolling mountain hills and waterfalls on the Great Dividing Range. The countryside is scattered with enchanting gardens, vineyards and grazing pastures. The region is developing a reputation for perfumed, cool climate pinot noir and fresh, aromatic whites including pinot gris and sauvignon blanc. Pinot gris and riesling are delicate and floral, while sauvignon blanc is crisp and grassy. Chardonnay is made in a citrusy cool climate style and briary cabernet sauvignon ripens well in warmer years. Shiraz, merlot and sangiovese can also be found. The region is home to a good collection of boutique wineries and vineyards.
The Southern Highlands are situated 100km south west of Sydney, around the townships of Mittagong, Bowral and Moss Vale. The exciting young wine region took off in the 1980s and now boasts over 350 ha of vineyard. The Southern Highlands benefits from a moderately continental climate that is regarded as cool. Elevations of 500-900 metres bring mild summers and cool winters. Rain is plentiful and falls throughout the year. A variety of soils include fertile volcanics rich in basalt, sandy/loamy podsols and clays.
The stunning private gardens of the Southern Highlands are open to the public during the Spring Tulip Time and Summer Wine, Arts and Roses festivals.
