Centred around the town of Kingaroy, South Burnett is an emerging wine region in the hinterland of the Majestic Bunya Mountains. Verdelho and chardonnay are the region’s leading white varieties. They make tropical and citrus flavoured wines of pineapple, melon, stone fruit, honeysuckle and lime. Semillon is soft and approachable with lemon and herbal tones. Shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and merlot are the main red varieties of the region. They make supple, generous wines with ripe berry flavours. Small plantings of grenache, sangiovese and barbera can be found in the region. Many producers also make fortified tawny and muscat styles.
South Burnett is situated 200km north west of Brisbane, directly inland from the Sunshine Coast. It is divided by the Stuart and Booie Ranges and home to the inland Lake Boondooma. The South Burnett wine region was developed in the 1990s in response to viticulture recommendations posed by the Macarthur report. The new wine district now has over 450 ha of vineyard. They are set amongst rich grazing pasture in a picturesque rural countryside. The region enjoys a temperate, sub-tropical climate of warm days and cool nights with plenty of Summer rain. Most vineyards lie at altitudes of around 550 metres. There are many soil types throughout the area, including fertile black, brown and red clays, volcanic and light sandy soils.
The Bunya Mountains National Park is home to countless species of native birds and wildlife. The dome-shaped crown of the bunya pine stands tall and proud above the rainforest.
