Nestled in the heart of Alfaro, a small town in the Rioja region of Spain, lies the esteemed winery of Palacios Remondo. This family-owned producer has a rich history that dates back to the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, when the wine industry in Rioja suffered a decline in quality due to a focus on the ubiquitous Tempranillo grape.
Growing up in this environment, Álvaro Palacios witnessed first-hand the "dumbing down" of Rioja, where the once-diverse wine region became synonymous with Tempranillo and its mass-produced, artificial wines. But Álvaro, now at the helm of Palacios Remondo, is determined to change this narrative.
Under his guidance, the vineyards of Palacios Remondo have undergone a remarkable transformation. Biodynamic practices are now the norm, with low-crop organic plantings of local Garnacha genetics and a sprinkling of Viura. Tempranillo, once the dominant grape, is now only sourced from select growers near Haro on the north shore of the Ebro river.
Gone are the days of the "Crianza-Reserva-etcetera" model of production. Instead, Palacios Remondo wines are a true reflection of the unique terroir of Rioja, showcasing the diversity and complexity of the region. With a renewed focus on quality and sustainability, Palacios Remondo is leading the way in redefining Rioja and reclaiming its place as one of the world's premier wine regions.
