Guimaro

Located in the north-west of Ourense, in the heart of Galicia, lies the stunning Ribeira Sacra region. This area, defined by the powerful Miño and Sil rivers, is known for its remarkable landscapes and ancient fortress town of Monforte de Lemos. It is also where red wine production in Spain begins. Ribeira Sacra is a land of contrasts, where coastal granite soils blend with continental schist, creating a unique terroir. The steep slopes, with gradients reaching up to 85 degrees, are a sight to behold. Endless steps lead to the terraced vineyards, with a difference in altitude of hundreds of metres. It is a true test of determination and bravery to cultivate vines here, earning the region the nickname of "heroic viticulture". Established in 1996 after the devastation of phylloxera and a period of bulk wine production, the D.O. Ribeira Sacra is now on a journey of rediscovery. The Perez family, owners of 9 hectares and controllers of another 16 leased from small subsistence growers, are at the forefront of this revitalization. Under the leadership of Pedro, who took over the family business in 2000, a shift towards quality over quantity has been the focus. Guimaro wines are made with a traditional approach, reflecting the family's deep respect for the land. Organic viticulture, wild yeast fermentations, foot treading, and the use of old wood for ageing are all part of their winemaking philosophy. With a limited use of sulphur, they allow the true expression of the terroir to shine through. Guimaro is a testament to the resilience and determination of the Ribeira Sacra region, producing wines that are both bold and elegant.
