Domaine Taupenot Merme, located in the heart of Morey-Saint-Denis, France, holds a rich history that spans nine generations. The domaine was officially established in 1963 when Romain's parents, Denise Merme and Jean Taupenot, united their respective family's holdings. However, viticulture has been a part of the Taupenot family since the 17th century.
Romain, the current proprietor, has been involved in the domaine since childhood, helping with the harvest and even selling his grandfather's wines to travelers passing through the region. After studying business in Paris, Romain returned home in 1998 to take over management of the domaine alongside his sister, Virginie.
Together, Romain and Virginie oversee the production of nineteen different wines across seventeen appellations from their 13.5 hectares of vineyards in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. Their premier and grand cru vineyards, some of which are over 80 years old, are carefully tended to using organic farming methods. The goal is to allow the unique character of each site to shine through in their wines.
In the cellar, Romain follows a minimalist approach, allowing the quality of the grapes to speak for themselves. Wild yeast fermentation, gentle cellar operations, and minimal use of new oak result in wines that are pure, graceful, and true to their terroir. The wines are bottled unfiltered and with minimal sulfur additions.
Romain describes his winemaking style as one of richness and freshness, with a focus on balance and elegance. With such a diverse collection of esteemed Burgundian terroirs under their care, Romain and Virginie are dedicated to showcasing the unique character of each site in their wines. Domaine Taupenot Merme is a true testament to the rich history and dedication of the Taupenot family, and a must-visit for any wine lover seeking the true essence of Burgundy.
