Nestled in the charming village of L'Etoile, meaning 'star', sits the Domaine de Montbourgeau. This small but mighty producer is located in the southwestern area of the Jura region in France, with only 52 hectares of land dedicated to their vineyards. The name of the village is said to either come from its star-shaped layout or the abundance of ancient starfish fossils found in the soil, adding a touch of magic and mystery to the place.
The Domaine has been in the family for three generations, with Nicole Deriaux currently at the helm, continuing the traditional winemaking practices passed down from her grandfather. The ten hectares of vines primarily consist of Chardonnay and Savagnin, with a small planting of Trousseau and Poulsard for the reds. The vines are organically farmed, and the vinification process is done in the cave underneath the family's home, using indigenous yeasts.
The result of this natural approach to winemaking is a range of precise, intense, and elegant wines. The whites are aged in barrels without racking or topping off, allowing the true expression of the l'Etoile terroir to shine through. The limited production is bottled with minimal intervention, resulting in wines of unique purity and character.
While many may overlook Domaine de Montbourgeau for more "Instagrammable" producers, their wines have caught the attention of wine critic Mike Bennie, who awarded their 2012 Cuvee Speciale Chardonnay with an impressive 96 points. Their 2014 L'Etoile Chardonnay and 2018 Poulsard also received high praise, solidifying their place in the Jura region as a producer to watch. With their commitment to sustainable farming and dedication to traditional winemaking, Domaine de Montbourgeau is truly a star in the making.
